Located on the Clinch River approximately 15 minutes northwest of Knoxville, Clinton is the county seat of Anderson County.
When the town was established in 1801, it was named Burrville for the country's Vice President of the time, Aaron Burr. The name was changed to Clinton in 1809, seemingly in support of George Clinton, who replaced Burr as Vice President during Thomas Jefferson's second term.
Clinton was widely known for its freshwater pearls in the early 20th century, when Tennessee was one of the top pearl-producing states in the country.
In 1956, Clinton High School became the first desegregated public high school in the South. Bronze statues commemorating the historic occasion can be found outside the Green McAdoo Cultural Center, less than a mile from the school.
